2012 started off very promising for Huawei, who planned a never before seen Western charge with a bunch of smartphones, including one that looked very special at the time. Unfortunately, not all went Huawei’s way this year, so the invading of the “Free World” got delayed or even canceled altogether.
At least that’s what we thought, because now we’re hearing an entire new set of very encouraging info about Huawei’s future plans, making us ready to bet we’ll be seeing high-end phones from the Chinese OEM in Europe and the US in 2013.

The Ascend D2 was unveiled in China about a month back, and just like any other presentation event for an upcoming super-phone, there were a few details left out. Thankfully, the blanks are now starting to be filled out, completing an outstanding spec sheet.
If we are to trust intel found in GLBenchmark’s database, the 5-incher will be coming not only with an “edge-to-edge” display, but with one boasting a full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). Technically, the documents found over at GLBenchmark showed the resolution at 1800 x 1080 pix, but it’s easy to guess that’s because the “beast” will feature on-screen buttons.

Moving on to the 1.5 GHz quad-core chip wrapped in mystery before. Unsurprisingly, this will be paired with a Hisilicon Technologies GPU, which means the SoC itself will be “homebrewed” as speculated. It still remains to be seen what model will this processor be, but we’re guessing Huawei will be introducing a newer chip than the K3V2 we saw fitted under Ascend D Quad’s hood.
Lastly, the benchmark also confirms the Ascend D2 runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, though that may still be bumped to 4.2 by the time of the phone’s release.
Talking about release, this latest leak basically settles it – the next public presentation of the D2 will be at CES 2013 in January with the commercial launch most likely happening soon after. China will definitely get this big guy first (probably in the spring), while a global release is still hard to predict.
We can’t wrap this up without recapping the previously confirmed specs, which include a 13 MP rear-facing shooter, a 1.3 MP front-facing cam and a more than generous 3,000 mAh battery. There should also be 2 GB of RAM in there, while on-board storage could start at 16 GB. Now tell me you’re not mind-blowingly excited about the Ascend D2!
