Those who aren’t interested in abandoning their Galaxy Nexus this year have a reason to be excited about the release of its successor, the Google Nexus 4. Now that the Nexus 4 is already up for sale, this can only mean the Android 4.2 update for the Galaxy Nexus is just around the corner.
In fact, we reported just a few hours back that the “new” Jelly Bean update has been rolled out to the GSM Galaxy Nexus. Seeing that it may take days and even longer to receive the over-the-air update, here’s your chance to download and install the new firmware yourself.
The official Android 4.2 OTA file (software build JOP40C) for the Galaxy Nexus can be downloaded right here. Once you have the file, you can simply flash it to your Nexus — though your phone may have to be on a stock ROM. Do note that the update is meant for the takju variant of the GSM model, and not the yakju model.
With the commercial release of the Nexus devices, it usually won’t take long for Google to upload the latest Jelly Bean factory images. But those who want to play with Android 4.2 on their Galaxy Nexus ahead can do so. As always, please proceed with caution and do it at your own risk.
