We’ve certainly seen a heap of 1080p smartphones getting teased, leaked or unveiled in recent history, but as far as devices you can actually buy the HTC J Butterfly (aka Droid DNA) is still the single officially released device.
Not even the mighty Oppo or ZTE from distant Asia have been able to get a move on their Full HD handhelds, with the Find 5 stuck at “coming soon” status and the Nubia Z5 subject to rumors and last-minute changes.
But the award for the second 1080p smartphone to start selling is given out this year after all, to a big guy most of you forgot or didn’t even knew existed in the first place. That’s right, it’s Sharp’s bittersweet Aquos Phone SH930W.
The 5-incher has been expected in Mother Russia ever since mid-November, but its release has been pushed back due to mysterious reasons all the way until now. Still, the phone does come out in time for Christmas and that should count for something, shouldn’t it?
As expected, the SH930W will be anything but budget-friendly, going for RUB 21,900, or around $715. That’s more than what HTC is charging for the SIM-free Droid DNA in the States, but keep in mind this is Europe we’re talking about here, so 700 bucks sounds pretty fair.
Meanwhile, Sharp’s flagship device is reportedly slated for a Taiwanese release this month too, which will go nice with the Hong Kong launch already announced. The price bar there is much lowered, to a more affordable NT $15,900, which translates into around US $546.
As far as other markets go, Sharp is being as shady as always, so we really can’t say whether or not the SH930W will be getting other releases by the end of the year or ever for that matter.
The spec sheet is the one we’ve talked about before, with sweet highlights including the 1,920 x 1,080 pixels IGZO display, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of on-board storage and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. On the flipside, there’s only a dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU powering the device, a run of the mill 8 MP shooter slapped on the back and a meager 2,100 mAh battery inside.
So, now that Sharp has ensured its place in history, the race is again on – what will be the world’s third 1080p smartphone to start selling and, most importantly, who will follow on Droid DNA’s footsteps in the States? Any guesses?
