As unbelievable as it might have seemed not long ago, Full HD smartphones are set to become the norm rather than the exception in a short while. HTC kicked the craze into gear with the J Butterfly (aka Droid DNA, aka Butterfly), with basically every other major player teasing something similar of late.
But while it’s no surprise that Samsung, Sony and LG are to compete closely with HTC, Oppo’s, ZTE’s and now Pantech’s presence in this select circle are clear signs that… well, it’s not going to be a select circle for much longer.

Pantech’s addition to the 1080p phone “niche” is known at this time only as the Vega IM-A860S and IM-A860L. Those are most likely codenames for SK Telecom and LG U+, two of the three major carriers in South Korea.
The Korean-bound smartphone has been spotted in GLBenchmark’s database, but also getting Wi-Fi certification, so there’s a good shot the launch is right around the corner. Still, we’re too close to the end of the year to expect this in 2012, so most likely we’ll be seeing it on display at the CES in January 2013.

As for its spec sheet, that would have been shockingly awesome about two months ago, but now unfortunately is more or less run of the mill. Oh, alright, maybe not run of the mill in the true sense of the word, but we’ve definitely seen it all before.
We’ve seen the 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution LCD panel, the quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, the Adreno 320 GPU and we’ve definitely seen Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and LTE before.
Then again, this is where the rumors stop, so the gray area of the spec sheet is massive enough to keep us on our toes. We don’t know what kind of cameras, how much RAM and on-board storage the phone will come with and we also have no idea what battery will it feature and if it’ll have microSD support. Furthermore, we don’t even know the display’s diagonal size (though we’re guessing 5-inch), so everything’s still in play.
We can also expect Pantech to keep the device’s price very low, so after all, if the Vega IM-A860 can escape Korea, it’s definitely a beast to look forward to. Anyone out there ready to ditch HTC, Samsung, Sony and LG’s Full HD super-phones for one from Pantech?
