We know that two versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be released in various markets around the world, one featuring a 1.9 Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, and the other boasting a 1.6 Ghz octa-core Samsung Exynos 5 processor. A breakdown of the list of countries receiving either version of the smartphone was leaked a while back, which indicated that the Snapdragon 600-powered version would be available in countries with LTE networks, with the other heading to non-LTE markets.
Now, an ET News report says that the Qualcomm version of the smartphone could head to more markets than initially expected, with 70% of the first batch of 10 million Samsung Galaxy S4 units will arrive with the Snapdragon 600 processor on-board. We reported earlier that Samsung’s LSI division, which produces the Exynos processors, has faced some quality and production issues with its latest octa-core processor. The Exynos 5 processors will go into mass-production only in Q2 2013, much later than the expected late-March to early-April release of the Samsung flagship.
While some may consider this “bad news,” I don’t think it is. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor has performed amazingly well in early benchmark tests, and if the octa-core processor does in fact perform better, I don’t see it outshining the Qualcomm processor by that much, if at all. Granted, this is just an opinion, as there aren’t any hands-on comparisons available. But its definitely a good choice to go with the more tried and tested processor, if only to avoid any launch delays of the highly-anticipated smartphone.
Of course, assuming the numbers are accurate, there will be 3 million units of the Galaxy S4 with the Exynos 5 processor, so there shouldn’t be any issues with the release even in countries slated to receive that particular version. We’ll have to wait to see how this situation is going to play out.
What are your thoughts? Would you rather have the Exynos 5 version or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 version of the Samsung Galaxy S4? Let us know in the comments section below.
