Most of us have hear of Scroogled by now. For those unfamiliar, it’s an ad campaign funded by Microsoft that tells people that Google scans people’s emails so they know what kind of ad content to show. It’s nothing hardcore Google fans didn’t already know about, but it seemed to freak out the general public. Those ad campaigns have mercifully come to an end.
According to The Verge, Microsoft has announced the end of the Scroogled ad campaign in favor of something more worth their money. We doubt that anything they invest their money in these days is worth it, but we can’t imagine their funds going to something even worse than Scroogled. Nevertheless, you won’t see it on TV anymore.
Despite bringing the Scroogled ads to rest, Microsoft’s senior director of online services Stefan Weitz claimed the ad was successful. He claims they raised awareness of Google’s allegedly unscrupulous business practices. However, it apparently has done little, as Weitz called people’s use of Google a habit akin to smoking.
At the end of the day, Scroogled isn’t going anywhere
The ad campaign is dead and gone, but that doesn’t mean Scroogled is going away. The official website of Scroogled is still up and running. If Microsoft was done with Scroogled as a whole, then the website would probably have gone down. So we can be sure that Microsoft has more plans for all this in the future.
For now, though, let us know what you think. Was Microsoft just trying to play the good guy by showing that Google scanned emails, or was it nothing more than an attack on Google to promote their Outlook.com email? We’re inclined to believe it was the latter.
