It was revealed yesterday that Charlie Kindel, a former Windows Phone manager at Microsoft, is moving to Amazon, in what could have passed for an April Fools’ Day joke (like the ones Google and a lot of other tech industry companies have made).
It’s true that Kindel’s name would make him perfect for such a joke and the fact that the news came out on April 1st only added to suspicions. Kindel later confirmed the news that his new job was at Amazon in an answer to a tweet, as you can see below.
He also modified his current position on LinkedIn:

As the screenshot shows, Kindel is recruiting a team of developers, program managers, and program managers. He titles himself a “general troublemaker in the tech & mobile space”, which certainly bodes well for Amazon’s disruptive aspirations. The news of the move comes following several rumors about the Amazon smartphone, claiming that Innolux is making displays for the supposedly 4.7-inch device.
Naturally, Charlie Kindel avoided to reveal his responsibilities at Amazon, characterizing his projects with epithets like “cool”, “secret”, and “wonderful”. The most specific he went was “I’m building a new team going after a totally new area for Amazon. ”
Nowhere is the word smartphone mentioned, but it’s clear for everybody that the long rumored Amazon smartphone is the elephant in the room.
