MediaTek-powered Lenovo IdeaTab S6000 stops by the FCC

Chinese manufacturers don’t always have an easy time breaking into the American market. Even as OEMs in China would usually produce for the bigger brands, and even as the likes of ZTE and Huawei are often rebadged as local carrier offerings, it’s not always easy to break into the US as a mainstream brand. Lenovo is known for its notebook computers in the US, and is actually among the top smartphone and tablet sellers in China. But it has yet to launch as a mainstream smartphone and tablet brand in the US.

Announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona earlier this year, Lenovo is releasing its IdeaTab S6000 10.2-incher in the US, with the quad-core 1.2GHz MediaTek MTK8389 as the main component. Alongside that, Lenovo’s newest tablet will boast a 10.2 inch display sporting a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and boasting a 178-degree viewing angle. The S6000 will also run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and has been estimated to maintain a moderate battery life of around 8 hours in heavy use.
While MediaTek is not exactly stranger to the US market, the American smartphone and tablet space is dominated by Qualcomm (smartphones) and Nvidia (tablets). The Taiwanese firm has a 12% market share by revenue, however, and comes in third place in application processors after Qualcomm and Samsung, according to Strategy Analytics. MediaTek is dominant in China, though, and expects to ship 200 million processor chips for the Chinese market.
There is no word as to the exact price or release date for the S6000, but suffice to say that it will likely be a budget-friendly device, due to the choice of components. The device is now going through FCC approval, which means we can expect it in the near future. Even though MediaTek’s first offering isn’t the most powerful processor in the world, it is still a foot through the door and will help the Hsinchu-based firm build their reputation within the US.
