Asus announces Padfone Infinity – a 5-inch Full HD phone that turns into a 10-inch Full HD tablet

Aaand it’s out. The Asus Padfone Infinity, that is. Probably the best thing about MWC so far, although that doesn’t do us much good because the thing will most likely suffer from the well-known Padfone syndrome.

What, you haven’t heard of the Padfone syndrome? It’s when a gadget is so overpriced and hard to score that it becomes off-limits for 99% of the world.
But let’s look on the bright side for a minute. The third member of the Padfone family significantly steps things up performance-wise, sporting a 5-inch 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution screen in phone mode and a 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 pix res panel when used as a tablet. Not to mention it packs a quad-core 1.7 GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, along with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2 gigs of RAM.

In fact, almost everything is bigger and/or better about the Padfone Infinity, except maybe for the 13 MP rear-facing camera and 32 and 64 GB storage options, which were maxed out from the previous hybrid.
The front-facing cam has been bumped from 1.2 to 2 MP, the phone’s battery is now a comfortable 2,400 mAh unit, while when connected to the “Infinity Station” you are promised up to 40 hours of “juice” on a single charge.
On the connectivity side, you get everything you could need and then some – EDGE, GPRS, GSM, WCDMA, 4G LTE, HSPA+, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, A-GPS and Glonass. As for software, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean will butter up the phone-cum-tab, ensuring you don’t have to worry about updates for a while.

Asus has focused more on hardware and software bumps this time around and less on design tweaks, but why fix something that isn’t broken, right? And Padfone 2’s looks were definitely not broken. The “slender unibody design is crafted from aerospace-grade aluminum”, the phone connects to the docking station in the same seamless way as before and everything looks a-okay.
So, what exactly is wrong with this bad boy again? The Padfone syndrome, remember? According to official statements, the hybrid will see daylight in Europe in April for a starting price of €999 ($1325, Infinity station included). And will most likely never come to the US. Overpriced – check and hard to score in important markets – double check. Such a shame, eh?
