Sorry to spoil HTC’s moment (again), but Sony’s Xperia Z is simply thriving under the spotlight, craving for much more than the traditional 15 minutes of fame. The 5-incher is slowly making its way throughout the world, has been rooted earlier today and now seems to be closing in on its Android 4.2.2 update.
Sony promised to make the newest version of Jelly Bean available for the company’s latest flagship “soon” from day one, but, if new rumors are to be believed, the whole thing will happen by the end of March.
That’s the definition of blazing fast, but before suffering a heart attack from all the excitement, try to take today’s story with the usual pinch of salt. Well, not actual salt, because that can only cause further harm to your “ticker”, but you get the idea.

The folks at Xperia Blog have received the intel from an anonymous tipster, who’s also sent a screenshot to prove his reliability. Some details are blurred for obvious reasons, but other than that everything seems to check out.
The model number of the phone running Android 4.2.2 is C6603, whereas the firmware’s build number is 11.1.A.1.450 (the 4.1-running Xperia Z currently has version 10.1.A.1.350). The kernel version is also upped, from 3.4 for Android 4.1 to 3.6.
The upgrade’s “late March” ETA is a mere speculation at this point, but if testing has already begun we don’t see why it couldn’t happen by then. On the other hand, we don’t expect a lot of folks to be able to taste the new Jelly Bean flavor by April Fools. We don’t even know if the Xperia Z will be out by then in the US and Canada, so get ready for the Android 4.2 bump only in Asia and parts of Europe for now.
