If you were curious about which smartphone or tablet, not limited to just devices running Android but also including those with iOS and Windows Phone 8, is the best for gaming, there is now a way to find out! The Finland-based company Rightware, the leader in embedded UI technologies and benchmarking software tools, today released Basemark X, the world’s first benchmarking tool built on the Unity 4 game engine.
Basemark X has been designed keeping the usage profiles of modern and future graphic-intensive games in mind, and the highly-demanding test pushes the smartphone or tablet to the limit. Basemark X features game-like content, including particle effects, advanced lighting effects, post processing, and real-time shadows using shadow mapping.
Phone Arena managed to run the test on a few popular Android smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, and the Nexus 4. Here’s a look at the results -
As you can see, the Samsung Galaxy S4 performed the best overall, with the Google Nexus 4 taking the crown as far as the on-screen results are concerned, which is possibly because of the comparatively lower resolution of the device. I ran the test on my HTC One X as well, and it seemed to do better than the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy S3.

Basemark X 1.0 is available for free from the Google Play Store here, and will be available soon on the Apple App Store, with a later launch date planned for Windows Phone 8 devices. It is recommended to run Basemark X on Android devices featuring Android 4.0 ICS or higher. You can also check out a part of the on-screen test in the video below -
