Rumor: Sprint Optimus G2 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU spotted at Bluetooth SIG

A new unannounced LG smartphone has been spotted at Bluetooth SIG, with reports suggesting it could be Sprint’s CDMA version of the Optimus G2.
The smartphone – codenamed LG-LS980 – has a model number that’s awfully similar to the international Optimus G Pro version (E980). Furthermore, considering that LG handsets arriving at Sprint have the “LS” prefix in the model number, one would be inclined to believe this newly found handset is Sprint’s upcoming LG Optimus G Pro.

So far, only AT&T has launched the Optimus G Pro in the U.S., but it wouldn’t be surprising to see other carriers, especially the ones that have the Optimus G in stock, interested to also offer buyers the Optimus G Pro model.
However, before you get excited about a Sprint Optimus G Pro, we’ll tell you that current reports suggest that the LG-LS980 is actually the Optimus G2 if not a Nexus version (also headed for Sprint). According to Android Police, there’s “an official Sprint page with build.prop info” for the handset, that reveals certain specs and features.
From the looks of it, the LS980 would feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) chip, a display of unknown size but with 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) resolution, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board memory and, interestingly, no microSD support. As for cameras, the Sprint page mentions a 13-megapixel camera with Full HD video recording support and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter with 720p video recording.  and The device appears to run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, and according to the Bluetooth SIG, Bluetooth 4.0 support is included.

Considering that particular processor type, it would make more sense for this LS980 to be the Optimus G2, as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 is just getting ready for mass-production, so it will be a while until we see it in phones.
Very interesting is also the fact that there’s no microSD support on this particular device. Could we be looking at a Nexus 5 here with CDMA support? Or will LG follow in HTC’s design cues, and ditch the memory expansion slot from some of its flagship devices?
While we can’t answer these questions just yet, we’ll remind you that just a few days ago a new LG handset has been spotted in the wild, at which time we asked ourselves whether it was the LG Optimus G2 or the Nexus 5.
Before that, other reportedly upcoming LG handsets have been spotted in AnTuTu benchmarks but also at the Bluetooth SIG, and at the time we also wondered whether those were the first Optimus G2 traces.
We would expect the LG Optimus G2 to be unveiled at some point in the last quarter of the year right alongside the Nexus 5, in case LG will indeed make the next Nexus smartphone. But if that’s the case, and if the handset above is indeed either an Optimus G2 version or a Nexus 5, then why are we seeing the device already appear in leaks and reports?
