All eyes might be fixed on Sony’s upcoming high-end Hayabusa and Mint smartphones, but the company is also planning to strengthen its entry-level line-up, too. The Xperia Tipo, which we saw not long ago getting the FCC’s approval, will be hitting the UK in just a few weeks.
That’s a fact, and not some sort of rumor, even though Sony has yet to release a statement on the matter. We don’t need any statement, however, because O2 and Orange, two of the most important British mobile operators, are already listing the phone on their websites as “coming soon”.
Neither O2, nor Orange is mentioning the exact date when we should expect the Tipo to actually start selling, or for how much, but O2 is listing it as coming in August. The guys over at Unwired View are also claiming to have heard from a source that August 20 will be the phone’s official launch date, and we have no reason to suspect them of lying.
As far as pricing goes, there’s nothing official we can report right now, but, based on a leak from way back January, we should see the Tipo released for around £ 145-190, if in fact the Xperia Tipo is the same device as the previously codenamed Tapioca. We do have every reason to think that the two phones are the same one, which would mean that the Tapioca DS would be the dual-sim version of the Tipo.
And talking about that dual-sim edition, it seems that it won’t come at the same time as its “brother”, and there’s a good chance its launch will be scheduled for around mid-September.
Both the Tipo and the Tipo dual will come packing an 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225AA processor, an Adreno 200 GPU, 512 MB of RAM, 2.5 GB of on-board memory, a 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen with 480 x 320 pix res, a microSD card slot, a 3.15 MP rear-facing camera, and a 1,500 mAh battery.
Those are some unspectacular specs and features, even by low-end standards, but the running of Android 4.0 ICS out of the box and the very cool design (the Tipo weighs less than 100 grams and measures 13 mm in thickness) might make this a perfect choice for users on a tight budget.
How about it, folks? Does the Tipo sound like something you would be interested in? What kind of price tag would make the deal an irresistible one?
