Apple has recently scored two preliminary victories in its trial against Samsung in the U.S. – the trial itself is set to start on July 30 – and they’re both injunctions against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy Nexus. Samsung appealed both decisions, but the same judge that awarded the sales ban dismissed both appeals. This all happened in just over a week, in what has been one of the worst periods for Samsung, from the legal point of view.
Otherwise the company is thriving – it’s expected to announce record sales and profits for Q2 2012 – as it has just launched its 2012 flagship device in a variety of markets. Another good news for the company is that Google has officially joined the fight against Apple after the latter obtained the Galaxy Nexus injunction in the States, and found a solution to circumvent the “unified search” patent deemed as infringing: remove local search results from the results displayed by the phone’s search feature and leave just the web-based ones. Unfortunately, the same search “dumbing” is currently being applied to U.S. Galaxy S3 versions, and we could see Samsung remove unified search from a variety of Android devices in the future.
Meanwhile, Samsung obtained a temporary stay of the Galaxy Nexus ban while the U.S. Court of Appeals is waiting for Apple’s response. Consequently, the unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus is back in stock on Google Play. The phone is selling for the same $349, and Google reminds potential buyers that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is coming soon.
