Earlier this week, it was reported that Baidu would be following in Google Glass’ footsteps with the Baidu Eye. While the story turned out to largely be an April Fool’s joke, analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets believes that Microsoft is working on their own Glasses competitor.
According to White, Microsoft is planning to release their competing glasses device sometime in 2014. Keep in mind that this is simply an analyst statement with no real proof to back up his claim.
Still, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Microsoft could be considering an entry into the wearable tech market. We are already seeing quite a few different companies get involved in this market. In the smartwatch market we have companies like Samsung and Apple preparing to duke it out. When it comes to glasses, there are several devices outside of the Google’s offering such as Vuzix Smart Glasses, or the TTP AR handset.
Could Microsoft have its sights set on creating a Google Glass rival device?
Right now, wearable computers seem like niche items that are fit more for sci-fi movies than public use, but then again there was a time when the same could be said for smartphones. As such devices become more affordable, we could see all sorts of unique wearable computers surface. For Microsoft, jumping on the bandwagon sooner rather than later might be a way to keep themselves from missing out on yet another opportunity. Such a move isn’t without real risks, though. Coming into a market early doesn’t guarantee success as seen with Microsoft’s XP-based tablet PCs, and Microsoft hasn’t exactly had a lot of luck in the mobile market over the years.
It’s hard to imagine that consumers would go crazy over the idea of a “me-too” glasses device from Microsoft. What do you think, could Microsoft be considering taking on Google’s Glasses or is this just another empty statement from an analyst?
