Ruggedized handsets have never been mainstream hits, but many important tech manufacturers seem to still count on them. Samsung for instance is not only pushing forward with the Rugby line of “armored” phones, but is actually betting quite large on the new Galaxy Rugby.
Already confirmed as coming soon to AT&T in the US as the Galaxy Rugby Pro, the new 4-incher is now rumored to be released on two major Canadian carriers before Ma Bell. Telus will most likely get the honor of launching the Galaxy Rugby LTE first, sometime “at the end of October”.
Not long after, on November 1, Bell will follow suite, though Canada’s second largest carrier will only be able to couple the phone with LTE speeds starting in the first half of 2013.
Other than that, we don’t expect any internal differences between the two versions of the Galaxy Rugby, so expect to get from both Bell and Telus a decent mid-range phone with Android 4.0 ICS, a 3.97-inch Super AMOLED display with 480 x 800 pixels resolution, a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor (most likely Snapdragon S3), 5 MP/1.3 MP dual cameras, DLNA, NFC, and a 1,850 mAh battery.
The main selling points will of course be the water, dust, shock and temperature proof certifications, although some of you might frown upon the bulk of a 161 grams phone. As far as pricing goes, rumors say that the off-contract Galaxy Rugby LTE will sell at around $400-$500. Any takers?
