Toshiba aims to “excite” us again with FCC approved 10SE/AT300SE Jelly Bean tablet

The Excite line-up of tablets might have not proven as popular as some expected, but it still managed to boost Toshiba’s sales numbers considerably. We don’t have any actual proof to back that claim, but Toshiba is now gearing towards the launch of a follow-up for a member of the Excite family, and that can only mean one thing.

As expected, the 10-inch slate has been the star of the Excite trio that also included a quad-core 7-incher and a gargantuan 13-incher, and now the 10SE / AT300SE / Regza AT300SE is ready to follow on its footsteps.
The second gen Excite 10 tab has been spotted getting FCC and Bluetooth SIG approvals, but also flexing its muscles in a GLBenchmark test, so a launch seems right around the corner. Based on all those different model names, it’s pretty clear that we will be seeing it get a global release, but it’s a bit too early to talk about exact dates.
What it’s not too early to talk about is the tab’s spec sheet, which looks guaranteed to include the running of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. That’s certainly good news seeing as Toshiba’s promises for JB updates don’t look like they’ll get materialized soon, but the rest of the intel is not very promising.

Though this is to be taken with a pinch of salt, the Excite 10SE looks bound to sport a 1,280 x 800 pixels resolution display and to be powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. The first gen Excite 10 features that same exact screen and a very similar Tegra 3 CPU (clocked at 1.2GHz), so this new tablet doesn’t look like a major evolution, but more like a rehash.
It’s also not what one would expect from a high-end late 2012 tablet, especially with the prospect of a Google-Samsung Nexus 10 looming. Then again, if those specs would become reality, that might allow Toshiba to target the new 10-incher more towards users on a budget. We’ve seen the first Excite 10 going for as less as $300, and a similar pricing for the second tab does sound like a very decent deal.
There’s very little known about other specs and features of the Excite 10 SE, so let’s talk a bit about the benchmark results. Basically, GLBenchmark 2.5 measures a device’s graphics performance, which seems to be more than decent on the future Toshiba 10-incher.
However, if we are to compare the results with those of the six month old Acer Iconia Tab A510, we will see virtually no difference. And the A510, while having a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 CPU under its hood, only runs Android 4.0 ICS.
