Since the launch of their Fiber internet service, Google have held the crown for the world’s fastest internet speeds. However, a Sony-backed ISP has crashed the party with the release of their own Internet service in Tokyo which is both faster and cheaper.

Available in the Tokyo area, the Nuro internet service is able to deliver download speeds of up to 2Gbps and uploads at 1Gbps. This is double the top 1Gbps download speed that Fiber is offering in the US (in Kansas City, Austin, and Provo), although the upload speeds are around the same.
On top of that, Nuro is also cheaper for homeowners to use than what Fiber is. When it first makes its way into Japanese homes, consumers will be able to subscribe to the service for just $51 (¥4,980) per month, beating the $70 per month required for Google Fiber’s high-speed network in the US.
It’s not surprising that Sony has come up with a faster internet service than Google. After all, Japan ranks the world’s second in high-speed internet connections, with 25% of all households connected to a fiber-optic service.
For the foreseeable future, Nuro will only be available in the Tokyo area, but, as the world moves to high-speed fiber networks, we can all hope will see more similar services in the coming years.
