Last week, the Financial Times reported that Google is planning to launch
a music streaming service similar to Pandora or Spotify. While details
were scarce, I noted at the time that the move would make great sense
for Google, which already is a big player in the music business, thanks
to its YouTube property and Play Music service.
Yesterday, Bloomberg
chimed in with a report of its own, originating from “two people with
knowledge of the situation.” While Bloomberg’s piece doesn’t offer a lot
of new info, it does confirm that Google is targeting a Q3 2013 release
for the service, which means we could get to try it as early as July.
Negotiations
are currently underway between Google and music labels, said
Bloomberg’s anonymous source. The tech giant is also working on renewing
the licensing deals that cover user-generated videos that have music in
the background. In case you think that’s not a big deal, consider that
dozens of YouTube videos of the Russian meteorite have been taken down in Germany, because music was playing in the background.
Personally,
I am excited about the prospect of a Google music streaming service,
and judging from comments here and on Google Plus, many other people
are. If only the service would make it outside the US sometime this
decade…
