On the Google Lat Long blog, Google Maps Software Engineer Christopher Van Der Westhuizen announced a pending update to the Google Maps for Android app. Over the years, Google has amassed a huge database of public transit information. They have now collected information on schedules from around the world covering over 1 million stops. The systems are located in over 500 cities, including places like New York City, London, Tokyo and Sydney. Today’s announcement includes improvements for accessing this data on mobile devices.

To improve access to this wealth of information for users on the go, Google is set to release an update to their Google Maps for Android app taking it up to version 6.10. For the public transit portion of the app, users can now select specific modes of transit (e.g. subway, train, bus) when the Transit Lines layer is turned on. This is especially helpful in areas where transit lines are concentrated or even overlapping and you only want to see one mode of transit. Google has also improved information on the layouts of transit stations. This is accessible by tapping on the name of a transit station.
Google has made some other improvements to the app. When selecting a region, such as a city, the borders of the region will now be highlighted on the map. Users who make use of the My Places features of Google Maps will find improvements to the layout of this section of the app. Finally, users can let Google start collecting location history data to quickly pull up information on locations they frequent.
