It’s definitely not safe to put all your eggs in one basket in today’s tech world, but Samsung’s basket count is getting a bit out of hand. We know that Sammy’s increasing Android popularity is due to the fact that the company has devices for all tastes, needs and budgets, but the already thin lines between low-end, mid-range and high-end are just about becoming invisible.
The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 are Samsung’s flagships. That’s clear and obvious. The Galaxy S2 and all its variants are now considered mid-range. That is also undisputable. But what about the Galaxy S3 mini that will be on display in a German press event tomorrow? Is that high-end? Samsung seems to think so, although we’re not convinced.
And if that wasn’t enough to mess with our heads, here comes the Galaxy S2 Plus. This is a device that started making the rumor rounds right next to the S3 mini a couple of months back. While it is yet to be confirmed by Samsung, it looks like the real deal.
The S2 Plus has just been spotted in an AnTuTu benchmark carrying the GT-I9105 codename, and its rumored spec sheet continues to puzzle us. The test pretty much confirms that the handheld will be equipped with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz. The model and maker of the CPU is still unknown, although we’re ready to bet it will be an Exynos SoC.
The GPU powering the S2 Plus is thought to be a PowerVR SGX 544 MP, which is the main reason we don’t exactly know what to think of this phone. We’re yet to see the new graphics processing unit in action, but chances are it’s much snappier than the Mali-400 MP powering the S2, S3 and GNote 2. But if that’s the case, won’t a 1.4 GHz dual core CPU cripple the GPU’s performance? And if happens, will the S2 Plus end up being just another mid-ranger easy to lose track of?
Well, we can’t fully answer those questions yet, but we do have the AnTuTu result that should shed some light on the S2 Plus’ oomph. So, how does the new phone’s 7,458 score compare with GS3 and GNote 2’s results? In short, not good. The Galaxy S3 easily scores around 10,000 in the benchmark, while the Note 2 has been seen at a whopping 13,500.
We can’t rely very much on just one benchmark result (especially one leaked online), but it does look like the Galaxy S2 Plus will be just a slightly evolved version of the original S2. The rest of the rumored specs support that, starting with the running of Android 4.0 ICS and wrapping it all up with a pretty modest 1,650 mAh battery. Not to mention that the 4.3-inch display is thought to come with a 960 x 540 pixels resolution, which is anything but high-end.
Would anyone consider getting a Galaxy S2 Plus with this rumored spec sheet? Is it really the time for Samsung to come out with a Galaxy S2 rehash?
