Speaking at a conference today, Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt has stated that Google is now witnessing a pretty astonishing 1.5 million unique Android activations every day. This confirms the expedited growth we’ve seen in Android over the past couple of years, with now over 750 million Android activations completed world wide.

This figure is a decent improvement on the 1.3 million accounts which were being activated every day at the end of last year, and even improves on last month’s 1.4 million activations per day. There’s certainly no doubt that Android is the most popular operating system for mobile devices.
As another piece of good news for our favorite operating system, Eric Schmidt confirmed that Google remains on target to see one billion total devices in the hands of consumers by the end of 2013.
Looking further ahead to the not too distant future, Schmidt also suggests that adoption rates will continue to increase as Android reaches out to the next five billion people that Google reckons are eager to join the mighty Android army. This supposedly hinges on smartphone prices around the world reaching the sub $100 price mark.
In other words he’s expecting the rate of Android adoption to continue to grow over the next year or two thanks to cheap handsets, and that Android will eventually be the mobile OS of choice for most of the world’s population. That sounds like pretty bold claim to me.
Anyway, it’s good news for Google, Android, and good news for us too. A larger install base is sure to result in more businesses looking to invest in news apps and products to use with our smartphones and tablets.
Here’s to another strong year of growth for Android, cheers!
