It’s awfully difficult to get excited by any Android tablet other than the almost confirmed Google-Samsung Nexus 10, but how about a new 7-incher to take on the Nexus 7, Kindle Fire(s) and iPad mini?
And no, this won’t be just another 7-inch tab, but a scaled down version of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1. Now I know that the 10-inch GNote has only been received with mild enthusiasm, but we know Sammy is capable of getting there. What do you mean where? Where it has taken its smartphones and “phablets”, of course.
The GT-N5100 is the codename of the tablet believed to be the 7-inch Galaxy Note and that has been spotted already getting Wi-Fi and DLNA certifications. The disclosed approval docs don’t list the size of the gadget’s screen, but all rumors point towards that being less than 9”.
It remains to be seen if the display will measure 7 or 7.7-inches in diagonal (we’re betting 7), but what looks clear is that the panel will be HD and that under the hood there’ll be a quad-core 1.6 GHz Exynos 4412 processor ticking.
That’s the exact same CPU powering the rather expensive 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2, so chances are Samsung won’t be able to keep the price of the 7-incher as low as Google and Amazon. In that case, the iPad mini should be the only real competitor for the tab, so expect another high stakes Samsung vs Apple war.
No other specs or features are known at the moment, but the tablet has appeared in DLNA certification documents with two identities, under the GT-N5100 and GT-N5110 codenames. That means there’ll be at least two different models released, probably one with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity options.
Who’s up for a “creative” 7-inch Galaxy Note with quad-core oomph and S Pen support? What would be the ideal price of such a device? How about timing, when should Samsung release the tablet? Before holidays, after, next spring?
