Now that Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is officially out, we can’t but wonder what the first non-Nexus devices that will receive the update will be. We’re definitely not going to be surprised once we see CyanogenMod 10.1 (Android 4.2 Jelly Bean) roll out, even in early releases, for various Android handsets, but the CyanogenMod team can’t offer you a launch date estimate yet.
The team has posted a message on its Google+ page to update us on the CyanogenMod 10.1 progress, and from what we can gather, things are moving along nicely. The team plans to move from CM 10.0 to CM 10.1 “instead of starting over as was seen with the jump from Gingerbread to ICS,” and it has already taken the first steps to do so:
So we continue to work through the merger of 4.2 code and our CM enhancements. A branch in our github repos called mr1-staging has been created to facilitate the merger and is the target for core CM items (not features). While you wait for a new release, you should know that Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is available on Nexus devices so far, including the Nexus 10, Nexus 7, Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus, and that no Android manufacturer announced Android 4.2 update plans yet. As for CyanogenMod, the most recent version is CM 10.0 (Android 4.1.2).
mr1-staging is not meant to be compile-able, its only purpose is to be a staging grounds for our core work. Chances are, it is useless for independent builders. […]
While the 4.2 updates are on a smaller scale, they do present some changes that will need to be considered and will effect our implementation of features. Just to name them briefly: Telephony Split, Multi-User, Quick Settings, and Lock-Screen Widgets. These items will be a strong focus when the initial CM10.1 branch is created.
What do you say, can’t wait to get your hands on CM 10.1 or are you planning to wait for the official Android 4.2 update for your device?
