Oppo has the Find 5, ZTE the Nubia Z5 and Huawei the Ascend Mate. Enough to make you get past any preconceived notions you might have about Chinese technology and start the drooling? No? We highly doubt it, but if that’s the case maybe Huawei’s Ascend D2 will help change your mind.

Despite being technically official ever since late October, the Ascend D2 has been a very sneaky fellow. We’re yet to see one single “press image” starring the 5-incher and we’ve even come out a bit short on unofficial pics.

As a matter of fact, until today we couldn’t have been 100% certain if the “beast” was going to be rounded, squared or triangle-shaped and if Huawei was going to paint it pink or black. Now however we have an entire slew of leaked photos, showing what looks like a fairly elegant 5-inch white slab of silicon.
There’s nothing that really stands out at D2’s design, but it’s definitely not an ugly phone either. At a first glance it looks a bit plasticky, but we know that appearances can be deceiving, so the jury’s still out on this bad boy’s build quality.

On the other hand, the phone’s “waist” is definitely on the thick side. Rumors have the D2 weighing in at 170 grams and measuring 9.9 mm in depth, which is certainly not great. At least part of that extra bulk seems to be for a good cause, with the D2 just about confirmed to come with a 3,000 mAh battery, so things are not that bad after all.
Talking about the big guy’s spec sheet, that’s basically the same we heard about in October, with sweet highlights including the 5-inch 1080p display, a “homebrewed” Hass K3V2 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and a 13 MP rear-facing snapper.

Details like the existence or lack thereof of LTE, on-board storage or microSD support are hush-hush, while on the pricing front rumor has it the D2 will start at CNY 3,299 in China, which would translate into around $525. That’s more than the Oppo Find 5, but a tad less than the ZTE Nubia Z5, so we’re definitely going to see a fierce battle between the three.
Huawei will almost certainly have the Ascend D2 on display at CES 2013, when we should also hear a thing or two about the gadget’s release. Fingers crossed for an ASAP launch outside Asia and let the Oppo – ZTE – Huawei war begin! Who do you think will come out on top?
