Take control of the lock pattern
Use AutoLock to prevent the phone from locking up until you leave it alone for preset number of minutes.
It makes sense to have the phone sleep when you are on a call though, so your cheek doesn’t initiate actions auto magically.
Another app, Shake awake awakes your phone when you shake it during a call. Both these apps put you back in control of the lock pattern.

If you want to listen to radio, use “Pandora”.
You can also use streamfurious, Flycast, NPR Podcasts, Last.fm or imeem Music. Or Just subscribe to the radio station feeds you like on Doggcatcher.
I subscribe to ITconversations on Doggcatcher. The conversations network also hosts SpokenWord.org, Media Conversations, and the Social Innovation Conversations.
This app is now paid, but is well worth the cost. You can find other podcasts to subscribe to in the iTunes podcasts section.

Reset your phone to increase storage space and speed it up:
The easy way:
Settings > SDCard > Format
Settings > Privacy > Factory Reset
The hard way:
Do a hard reset and format your phones. You will have to re-download your apps and settings.
1. HOLD power button and shut down the phone.
2. Hold HOME and RED POWER down for 25 seconds until you see a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Keep holding it down even though the G1 logo shows up.
3. Now you can do 4 things.
Home+Back reboot system now – (Soft Reboot)
Alt+L – Toggle log text display – (Toggles between the exclamation and menu options)
Alt+S – apply sdcard:update.zip
Alt+W – Wipe data/factory reset – (Out of Box reset need to re-register.)
In case you forgot your pattern lock, you don’t have to reset your phone. Just follow these steps.

Scan any barcode and search for it
Use Shopsavvy, Compare everywhere or Barcode Scanner Shopsavvy finds almost all the electronics you can scan. The price comparisons are good too. The killer features is the alerts though. Be sure to use it during christmas shopping! Compare everywhere finds more house hold items than shop savvy. Jam jars, soups, coke cans, it can find anything. A tad slower than shopsavvy though.
Barcode scanner performed the worst. It needs an improved barcode database.
With the competition starting to heat up among android apps, the app that provides the most open data with spam prevention and data cleaning features would be the winner. Think wikipedia, not microsoft office.

Browser tips
Keep the zoom button pressed to set the display/font size that you are comfortable with.
I use the trackball a lot with the browser set to landscape mode. It allows you to browse with out opening the keyboard. The menu keys proximity to the trackball makes browsing easier.
If opening the keyboad to browse is your thing, you can use alt+scrollball to fast scroll.
Double touch an area on the browser and the page centers to that area.
Click shift button and use the scrollball to select an area starting with the cursor.
Use Menu+X to Cut, Menu+V to Paste in text fields. Oh, Menu+C is copy.
New windows can be set to open in the background so that you don’t have to look at loading screens. Long press trackball on a link to see more options for that link, including open in a new window.
Doubleclick on the trackball twice to show the entire page and the magnify too.

Conserve battery
Use Power Manager to perform the below actions when the battery level goes below 50%:
Reduce brightness of the screen in settings.
Limit internet connection to use only 2G networks.
If the above two dont work for you, try the below steps.
Use wifi, bluetooth, gps only when needed.
Disable autosync.
Setup shortcuts to the setting enable page using anycut to do it easily, alternatively use “toggle settings” app or you can find separate applications for each toggle action on the market.
You shouldn’t need to do all this as the new update will have enough battery life.

Decrease the volume all the way using the dedicated buttons on the right.
Increase the volume one step to put the phone in vibrate mode.

How to add ringtones on Android, so they appear in the ringtone menus
Locate music dir on the SD card (create it if not found)
Create three directories, ringtone, notification, alarms in it.
Any music files placed in these directories will appear in their respective menus.
May have to reboot the phone so they can be seen and picked.
You can also long press on a song in the songs list in the music player to add it to the ringtones.
Use Ringdroid to cut a song and use it as a ringtone.

Forgot lock pattern on android? Here’s a way to reset it.
Enter wrong pattern 5 times and wait for 30 seconds.
Select “Forgot pattern” and enter your gmail account username and password.
Make sure you use the same account that was used to activate the phone and double check the password by logging in to that Google account in a browser.
If you don’t have access to the original Gmail account, you will need to do a hard reset and loose your settings and apps on the phone. The data on the memory card will not be wiped though.

The hard way:
Do a hard reset and format your phones. You will have to re-download your apps and settings.
1. HOLD power button and shut down the phone.
2. Hold HOME and RED POWER down for 25 seconds until you see a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Keep holding it down even though the G1 logo shows up.
3. Now you can do 4 things.
Home+Back reboot system now – (Soft Reboot)
Alt+L – Toggle log text display – (Toggles between the exclamation and menu options)
Alt+S – apply sdcard:update.zip
Alt+W – Wipe data/factory reset – (Out of Box reset need to re-register.)
In case you forgot your pattern lock, you don’t have to reset your phone. Just follow these steps.

How to import contacts into android tips
Export contacts from Outlook or Outlook Express (or any other application) to csv format and then import to gmail. That should do it for most users.
If you have your contacts on an old GSM phone, you could export them on to the SIM card and then import them to your new phone. Google Contacts
While you are there, try the “find duplicates” functionality. You can also add contacts into groups. The groups show up on your phone too after the sync.
Now on your android phone, browse to Contacts>Settings>Display options>Select “Only contacts with phones”, and also Google>Select all groups.
If you want to pull social contacts too, install the Facebook and Twitter apps and select to import data from all contacts. You should then see pictures and other address data added to your contacts auto magically.
Scan any barcodes you see on the web or elsewhere using Barcode Scanner.
The app works on Google Product Search too, all you have to do is browse to it on you phone and click on the “Scan Barcode” button. Now you can compare prices on the go.
If you have Android 2.2, the Chrome to Phone extension is very nice too.

Galaxy S phones have the WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, 4G, enable/disable buttons in the notification area, but you might want to place Power Control, an android standard widget, on your home screen and have better control over your battery.
While disabling the GPS, enable Geo location using WiFi to retrieve current location without sacrificing battery power.
Select to import data on your existing contacts. Pictures and other address data are the automagically added to your contacts.
Set Facebook and Twitter to update once every 4 hrs to prevent your friends from draining your battery. The Facebook sync setting could be in Contacts>Settings>Accounts or in the app itself
Sign in to your phone with your Google account, if you haven’t done that yet.
Browse to Contacts>Settings>Display options>Select “Only contacts with phones”, and also Google>Manually select all groups. Then sync.
While you are at it, use the Email app to setup your school/office email too. Use IMAP or Exchange settings to ensure that email read status is synced to your phone.
Install Gtasks and sync your todo lists with Google tasks.
