MightyText lets you send and receive your phone’s text messages from any browser

This service has been available in Beta as a Chrome extension for some time, but ex-Googlers Maneesh Arora and Amit Sangani have just announced a new web app that will sync with MightyText from any browser. If you have not heard of it, MightyText is a new service that syncs your smartphone’s SMS and MMS messages directly to the cloud. The interface then allows you to send and receive your phone’s messages from any browser.
One simply needs to download the MightyText app from the Google Play Store and sync messages and contacts with MightyText’s servers. After that, one is ready to use the web app to text anyone from any device with a browser.
You are probably thinking of Google Voice as you read this, and that is because the concept is somewhat similar. I have been texting all my friends and family from any browser for a long time. But MightyText offers the benefit of avoiding a new phone number, unlike Google Voice. MightyText basically allows you to remote-control your smartphone.
Google Voice saves me money, as I no longer have to get a messaging plan. But many of you have unlimited texting included in your plans, making MightyText a much more enticing product. Not to mention that Google Voice does not yet have full support for MMS.
You can text away from the office, the classroom and even during meetings. But what do you guys say? Will you keep using Google Voice like me, or will you move on to MightyText?

Facebook update requires Froyo, promises a faster app

We'll believe it when we see it, but Facebook's latest Android app update promises to actually speed up login and navigation within the app. We know, we know. It's Facebook, whose mobile app has been pretty crappy considering that, well, it's friggin' Facebook. Also of note in version 1.9.7 is that if you're not running Android 2.2 Froyo or higher, you're SOL on running this bad boy. (Though we imagine the previous version of the app should work fine, and only a mere 6.1 percent of active devices are running an OS older than Froyo.)

Other bullet points in the changelog include front-facing camera support (that wasn't there before?), a new messaging feature that lets you hop between conversations and share photos, plus other bug fixes and a security improvement.

Of course, this is Facebook we're talking about, so we'll have to wait and see what just got broken, too. Download link is below.

Ice Cream Sandwich now on 7.1 percent of all Android smartphones

Over the past little while we've started to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich make its way to quite a few devices and now Google has updated their latest Android platform version statistics to give us all a better look at the rate of adoption across the board. Gingerbread is still the run away leader here with a total of 65 percent but Ice Cream Sandwich has now reached 7.1 percent of Android smartphones out there. For some perspective, that's up from the 2.9 percent reported in April.

About The Samsung Galaxy S2 4.0.4 Update

After news began to emerge a few days ago of a leak of the much anticipated 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update for the Samsung Galaxy S2, it has been confirmed that the update is now officially available, however, don’t get too excited yet, just now the update is available only for Galaxy S2 owners in Russia. The update will soon the markets in the rest of the world soon.

It is anticipated other owners will be able to obtain the update in the next couple of months.  Owners will be able to update their Galaxy S2 by either Samsung Kies or Over-The Air (OTA). So when you receive it, what can you expect?  Well the update promises to bring enhanced stability and a slew of performance updates and bug fixes. This latest update shows Samsung’s commitment to the Galaxy S2, despite the recent emergence of the Galaxy S3 in the marketplace.  Samsung has continued to push updates to all their versions of the Galaxy S2 to the latest version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but this is the first release of the 4.0.4. So, what should we expect? Definitely something good! Because since it is android, then there is nothing to worry about it being something of no use to the consumers. Since its launch in 2011, Samsung Galaxy S2 continues to attract interest from tech geeks who consider it sets trends whilst waiting for other smartphones to catch up.  Samsung announced that by June 2012, it had sold over 24 million of the Galaxy S2 handsets worldwide. Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance and has since a number of updates to its base operating system since it original commercial release of Android 1.0 in September 2008.  Since April 2009, each version has been released under a codename based on a dessert, which, released in alphabetical order have been cupcake, donut, éclair, froyo, gingerbread, honeycomb, and ice cream sandwich.  A jelly bean version was released late in June 2012 and owners of the Galaxy S2 will I’m sure be hoping that this latest update to Android 4.0.4 (ICS) will pave the way for a later update to Jelly Bean. The Galaxy S2 was originally launched with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) with most owners currently running on Android 4.0.3 (ICS).  Featuring a 4.3in Super AMOLED display, the Galaxy S2 was released in April last year.  The device sports a high resolution 8mp rear-facing camera and 2mp front camera.  It is equipped with an Exynos dual-core CortexA-9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz.  The handset is powered by a 1650mAH battery and according to Samsung, delivers talk time up to 18 hours and 20 minutes in 2G and up to 8 hours and 40 minutes in 3g connectivity. So, now Samsung users can enjoy a new update and hope that their smart phones continue to give them the very best of what they deserve for the money they have paid. Use Your Computer's Keyboard to Type on Your Phone with WiFi Keyboard

Do you love doing things such as sending text messages from your phone but hate using the tiny on screen or slide out keyboard? Of course there is always the speech to text option but many times it doesn't quite translate right if you don't have good reception or don't talk slow or loud enough. If you are an avid texter and just happen to be by your computer while your texting marathon happens to be going on then WiFi Keyboard may be exactly what you are looking for.

WiFi Keyboard uses your home wireless, cellular or even USB connection to make what you type on your computer's keyboard show up on your Android phone or tablet. When using WiFi Keyboard you will actually see the text typing into your phone as you type it on your computer. The text is entered via a simple web interface on your computer that gives you a text box to type in the text itself. You can even copy and paste text from documents or web pages from your computer right to your device.

By default it will show the text being typed into your phone or tablet as you type but not on your computer screen. Pressing the F4 key on your keyboard will switch the editing mode to your computer rather than your Android device. Then after you are happy with what you typed you would press F4 again to have it sent to your phone or tablet and then you can send your text message. WiFi Keyboard can also be used with other apps that allow text input so it's not just limited to text messaging.

Once you download and install the app you will need to configure your Android device to allow WiFi Keyboard as a text input method. This is done in your device's settings under Language & keyboard settings. Just simply check the box that says WiFi Keyboard and you are almost there.

Now when you are in a text box area on your Android you will need to change the text input mode to WiFi Keyboard by long pressing in the text box area and then releasing and you will get an Input Method selection where you can choose WiFi Keyboard. Now you are ready to start typing on your computer's keyboard and have the text sent to your phone or tablet as you type. When you are done you can simply do the process again and choose Multi-touch keyboard to go back to the way it was before.

To get to the proper webpage on your computer for the text input you will need to open a web browser and go to one of the following addresses you are given in the WiFi Keyboard app. Simply type one of the addresses into the address bar of your browser and press enter and you will be all set.

They say that Internet Explorer is not supported and Chrome is your best bet but it worked just fine in Firefox for us. If you are going to use WiFi Keyboard with your wireless connection then make sure it's enabled on your device first for best results.

WiFi Keyboard can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or sent to your device via the online Android Market.
