Snapdragon 800-powered LG D801 makes GLBenchmark appearance, early scores crush all competition

While technically ZTE had the honor of introducing the world’s first smartphone with a Snapdragon 800 CPU inside, chances are there’ll be others to crash Grand Memo’s launch party. You know, the Grand Memo that actually counts, not the already released S4 Pro version.

One of these party poopers could be the Xiaomi MI-3, rumored to land (in China) “sometime next summer”. The only other we know of is a mysterious LG device spotted in GLBenchmark under the D801 moniker.
But not only are we hearing about this D801 for the first time. The thing also carries a bizarre model number, which to our knowledge is totally unlike any other codename used by LG in the past.

We know better than to get overly excited by spotting a phone in GLBenchmark’s database, but chances are this particular handheld is legit. The SoC’s MSM8974 model number checks out, the Adreno 330 GPU likewise and on the whole there’s nothing to scream hoax here.
But besides the CPU/GPU combo, we only know three other things about the LG D801. A. the processor is clocked at 1.7 GHz, B. there’s on-board Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (for now), and C. the display is a 1,794 x 1,080 pix res unit (or Full HD with virtual buttons).
If I had to take a wild guess, I’d say this is either the Optimus G2 LG confirmed for a fall 2013 release, or an entirely new flagship, probably part of another Optimus family.

Oh, yeah, one last thing. If the D801 proves real and if it’ll come anytime soon (which we doubt), it could blow all the competition out of the water. The thing’s GLBenchmark results are not impressive. They’re the absolute best ever.
Among the high-enders this fellow can crush 3D performance-wise, there’s the HTC One, LG Optimus G Pro, Sony Xperia Z and ZL and even Apple’s iPad 4. The Samsung Galaxy S4 hasn’t yet flexed its muscles in this particular benchmark, but, judging by other test results, it should still be left trailing by LG’s supposed next “big thing”. Wowzers!
