Display technology seems to be the hot topic this week, as there’s yet more news coming out from a large display manufacturer regarding new smartphone screen technologies.
This time it’s the turn of Taiwan-based AU Optronics to announce that it will debut its new display technology at the China Optoelectronics Display Expo 2013 in Shenzhen from April 10-12. AU Optronics plans to unveil its first full HD 5-inch smartphone display which will be build based on OLED technology and will feature an impressive 443 pixels per inch.
Of course this isn’t the first high PPI display we’ve heard about though, at the beginning of the month we heard information about Japan Displays’ new 423PPI 5.2-inch HD display, and Samsung , among others, have their own HD smartphone display technologies as well.
The company stated that its new displays feature low power consumption, high contrast, high brightness, fast response times, and a free viewing angle. But what makes this technology so special considering that we already have a 5-inch Galaxy S4 with a 1920×1080 OLED display on the way?
Well this is also an interesting development for smartphone manufacturers looking to use OLED displays in their handsets, as Samsung currently has a monopoly OLED display technology in this bracket. Other handset manufacturers often opt for LCD displays in larger handsets instead, but competition from AU Optronics and Japan Displays in OLED technologies will open the market up to competition and possibly help to drive down prices.
AU Optronics is also planning to show off a range of LCD smartphone panels this week, ranging in size from 5 to 5.7-inches. This definitely seems to becoming an increasingly popular trend, as just yesterday we were reporting on manufacturers preparing so ship out 6-inch smartphone displays by the end of the year.
I’ll be interested to see how smartphone manufacturers react to a wider availability of OLED displays, and whether or not a larger portion of future handsets will favour OLED over LCD.
