Sony has failed to meet expectations so far in the Android smartphone market. Despite being a big name in tech with a loyal following the Xperia handsets have been consistently outsold by offerings from Samsung. According to CENS.com there are plans afoot to change that. They claim that Sony has announced a smartphone sales target of 50 million for next year.

We can’t find the source for this article so we’ve reached out to Sony, but we haven’t received a response as of the time of publication.
Back in the second quarter of 2012 Samsung sold over 50 million handsets and Apple shifted over 30 million iPhones. Sony sold just over 30 million for the whole year of 2012 so the company clearly has a lot of catching up to do. A target of 50 million is ambitious. Canaccord Genuity technology analyst, Michael Walkley, for example, has predicted 38 million smartphone sales for Sony in 2013 on Forbes.
The CENS.com article also suggests that Sony is planning to increase outsourcing from 30 to 35 percent and that Taiwan-based manufacturers like Compal and Foxconn will benefit.
We think there’s definitely room for Sony to do better and the ditching of the Ericsson name and assimilation of the Xperia brand were both good moves. The company is also bringing out some tasty looking new phones. We’ll keep you posted on this one.
