Well, they’ve done it again. The folks over at Tablet.Bg have got ahold of a pre-release unit of the Asus MemoPad Smart 10, which they’ve quickly reviewed, just like the MemoPad 7 and Acer’s Iconia B1 before.

And just like those two previous tabs, the 10-incher also looks a bit underwhelming, though it’s mostly praised by the Bulgarians. Well, maybe not underwhelming per se, but definitely overpriced for what it has to offer.
But first things first and let’s take a quick look at MemoPad 10’s specs:
  • 10.1-inch IPS capacitive display with 1,280 x 800 pixels resolution
  • Quad-core 1.2 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 T30L
  • GeForce ULP graphics card
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 16 GB of on-board storage
  • Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean
  • 5 MP rear-facing camera
  • 1.2 MP front-facing camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth
  • GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, microSD card reader, micro USB 2.0, micro HDMI, stereo speakers
  • 5,070 mAh battery
  • 556 grams weight
  • 9.9 mm thickness

Now let me ask you, doesn’t that spec sheet ring a bell? For me it does. And I know why – because it’s almost identical to the list of features rocked by last year’s Transformer Pad TF300T. And here’s what I don’t understand. If this new tab is an almost perfect replica of the old one, what exactly is its point?
Granted, the MemoPad Smart is considerably lighter than the TF300T (556 vs. 635 grams), but the rear-facing camera is downsized from 8 to 5 MP. And even if the cam wasn’t poorer this time around, I still feel the new tab’s presence wouldn’t be warranted.

To make matters worse, it seems the new 10-incher will be pricier than the old one for some reason. We’re yet to hear something official on that, but, according to Tablet.BG, the MemoPad 10 will go for BGN 669 ($460) in a 16 GB flavor, while the 32 GB TF300T is BGN 649 ($446). Not so “Smart” after all, eh?
But wait, maybe there’s something in the review to make things right. Only there isn’t. The design and build quality are highly acclaimed, the display gets the thumbs-up from the reviewers, while the battery’s performance is above par (7 hours and 25 minutes on a single charge).

Furthermore, the on-board Jelly Bean is as smooth as you’d expect and the Tegra 3 CPU seems to hold its own against Dead Trigger’s blood-thirsty zombies. Yet, there’s nothing really special about the tab, is there? Not to mention the Geekbench and GLBenchmark scores are lower than the ones achieved by the TF300T.
Sorry, Asus, but this one’s not looking like a winner to us. Not unless you shave a couple of bucks off that price. Who’s with us?
