We’ve witnessed some amazing advances in the different fields of mobile technology. But even though smartphone displays continue to boast higher resolutions and devices feature more powerful processors, battery tech hasn’t been able to keep up the pace.
There was a time when a phone would last for days on one charge, but now squeezing 24 hours out of your smartphone has become a difficulty. While there is an obvious solution of bigger batteries, OEMs tend to shy away from this in favor of maintaining form factor, in a world where thinner is better.
So while the batteries may not be as good as we’d like, a good direction to go is getting the device to charge faster. And Qualcomm has come up with just the thing, with Quick Charge 2.0. While predecessor Quick Charge 1.0 increased the speed of charging by 40%, Quick Charge 2.0 bumps that up to 75%. During testing, it was found that a tablet which would usually take around 7 hours to charge fully, was now getting charged in less 3 hours!
Quick Charge 2.0 is an integrated feature of Snapdragon 800 processors, but will also be available as a standalone IC, which means that a lot of other devices may be able to use this tech as well. The best part is that since Quick Charge 2.0 can deliver power up to 60 watts, this can also be integrated in larger devices such as notebooks.
Qualcomm wasn’t done with the features of the Snapdragon 800 processor when the company introduced it at this year’s CES. Qualcomm also introduced the Snapdragon Voice Activation, “the world’s first always-on, low-power listening feature.” Any device powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor can be “woken up” by a custom voice command, and respond, without the need of a single key press, working even when in standby or airplane mode.
Qualcomm is all set to continue its dominance in the mobile processor market, and Nvidia really needs to step up its game if it hopes to compete. Somehow, the Tegra 4 does not seem to cut it at the moment.
What are your thoughts? How important will features like Quick Charge 2.0 and Snapdragon Voice Activation be for you? Is Qualcomm going to run away with it in the processor wars, or does Nvidia still have a shot?
