Looks like it’s the season for phablets in India! After the announcement of the Byond Phablet PIII and the Byond Phablet PII, we now bring to you the announcement of another 6-inch Android phablet by California-based Swipe Telecom in collaboration with MTV India (owned and operated by Viacom 18), called the MTV Volt.

Here’s a quick rundown of the Volt’s specs and features:
  • 6-inch capacitive display with 854 x4 80 resolution
  • 1GHz dual-core processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 32GB
  • 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera
  • dual-SIM support
  • 3,200 mAh battery
  • Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean
Sandeep Dahiya, SVP and Business Head, Consumer Products at Viacom 18 said that the MTV Volt is a “made to order” product for a generation that is constantly communicating, entertaining and socializing, and includes features that address its needs, along with a price-point that suits its pockets. He added that the company expects the MTV Volt to generate a great response among the Indian youth population.
Also mentioned was the eventual availability of the MTV Volt V4, which will boast a larger 4,000mAh battery, while also having an exclusive TV player app that will feature popular content from MTV. I’m surprised that that the MTV Volt itself does not have this app available. I also expect the next iteration of the device to feature a better display, because the low resolution on a large 6-inch display is somewhat disappointing.
The MTV Volt will be available from over 10,000 retail stores across the country, as well as from online stores like the Swipe eStore, Flipkart, Infibeam, and more. The device is currently priced at Rs 12,999 (~$250). This release is to be the first of many considering a new licensing deal both companies have signed to launch between 8 and 12 smartphones, phablets, and tablets over the next two years. This is definitely a good start, and I can’t wait to see what both companies have in store for us in the future.
What are your thoughts? Would you consider buying the MTV Volt? What do you think of the current 6-inch smartphone trend that is sweeping the country?
