You don’t need a crystal ball to tell you supersized phones won’t go out of fashion anytime soon, but is there no limit to the pushing of the screen sizes further and further? Huawei certainly thinks not, as does Samsung, if we are to trust rumors about the Galaxy Mega line.
And even if we were skeptical at the beginning, when the Mega family was dubbed Fonblet, the rumor mill is churning faster and faster and that can only mean one thing – the Megas are coming!
According to the relentless leakers over at Sam Mobile, one of the two Galaxy Megas to be introduced this year, the 5.8-incher, will come packing a dual-core 1.4 GHz processor. That’s not exactly high-end, but apparently Sammy is going to target budget-conscious folks in Europe and Asia with the new line.
The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is thus to be launched in both single and dual-SIM flavors. The specs will be the same across the board and will include 1.5 GB of RAM, an 8 MP rear-facing shooter, a 2 MP front cam, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and GPS.
The 1.5 GB of RAM sounds like a great compromise meant to keep the Galaxy Mega close to the top-tier devices of tomorrow, but here’s where things get messy – the display will allegedly sport a 960 x 540 pixels resolution.
Is bigger always better?
Mega’s 2,600 mAh battery is another far from impressive rumored spec, but it’s probably not that bad. After all, with a dual-core SoC and a low-res display on its side, the ticker should be able to hold its own for a good day or two in heavy use.
Finally, the Mega 5.8 is said to come with either Android 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, plus the Nature UX on top. We don’t know how the monster will look, but it should be pretty sleek, with a 9.7 mm thin waist.
No words on an exact release date, but, based on a previous rumor, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 is to hit the ground running come late May. The 6.3-inch bigger brother, whose specs are still kept under wraps, was reportedly slated for a mid-June release, but be sure to keep in mind that all this info is based on anonymous sources, so a healthy dose of caution is needed.
And now let’s hear it from you guys on the future of the extra-large phone. Is there a market for 5.8 or 6.3-inch “handhelds”? Is there enough room on that market for both high-enders and budget-friendly devices? And by the way, how much do you reckon the Galaxy Mega 5.8 will cost?
