The Android guessing game is only charming when its protagonist is a high-end device of sorts, so it should come as no surprise that MetroPCS and Samsung have gone up and made the Galaxy S Lightray 4G official less than a week after the handheld’s first online leak mention.
The 4.3-incher is already up for grabs for $459 with no contract, but, of course, you’ll need to sign up for a MetroPCS plan to actually be able to use the phone. The most affordable such plan is the $40 per month one, which offers unlimited talk, text and data, but only the first 250 MB of your monthly network consumption available at “blazing-fast 4G LTE speeds”.
Oddly enough, the sixth largest U.S. carrier has “neglected” to mention a couple of essential details about the new phone on its website, making the Lightray’s spec sheet still incomplete.
We know that the Droid Charge look-alike sports a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen, that it runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and that it features an 8 MP rear-facing shooter with LED flash, a 1.3 MP front-facing camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as a microSD card slot. The Lightray also comes with “Mobile Hotspot” capabilities, and is Dyle mobile TV-enabled, which are two original features that could really come in handy for a tech user these days.
Unfortunately, without knowing all these details, it’s still hard to place the Galaxy S Lightray 4G in one market niche. It’s clear that we’re not dealing with a high-end device, but is this a mid-ranger, or something between mid-range and low-end?
In terms of design, the Lightray looks exactly as it did in the leaked photos from last week, which is not bad news. Weighing in at 4.87 ounces and measuring 0.46 inches in thickness, the new 4.3-incher is sleek and decently fashionable, but not tacky. In other words, you won’t stand out of the crowd with the phone, but you won’t be ashamed of it either.
We don’t usually like to tell you what to do, but this time around be sure to ask MetroPCS for more details about the handheld before deciding to buy it. And if you happen to find out something of use, don’t be shy and share it with the world with a comment below.
