The Facebook app for Android may have its share of problems, but at least Facebook seems to be trying to make it up to Android users. Facebook Messenger for Android 2.0, released today, has a new feature that is exclusive to the Android app: threaded messages for both Facebook messages and your SMS text messages.
With the new update, any SMS message you receive is pulled into Facebook Messenger in addition to your regular SMS app. Don’t worry though: the messages only live on your phone, they’re not copied to the Facebook website or sent to Facebook in any other way.
For now, the threaded SMS feature is only available on certain phones, with the HTC EVO 3D, HTC One X, HTC Wildfire S, LG Optimus Black, LG Optimus Hub, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy SIII, and Samsung Galaxy Y being able to use the new feature. Facebook has said that more phones will be receiving support for threaded messaging in the next few weeks.
The new Facebook Messenger update also includes a slide-out pane showing who is online, a more traditional-style conversation view, and a ‘Favorites’ area to quickly select friends you chat with frequently. The Facebook app for Android is also receiving an update soon that includes most of these features, thought its unlikely that this will be the update that fixes the app’s notorious slowness.
Have you got the update yet? Do you plan to use Facebook Messenger for text messaging now, or are you going to stick to your current app?
