Previous Post Next Post Surprise, surprise: Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G to hit T-Mobile with S4 CPU after all

We’ve talked quite a lot these past few weeks about the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G (formerly known as the Galaxy S Blaze Q), but we just couldn’t wrap our heads around the T-Mo-bound slider’s pricing.
We like an elegant phone with the added functionality of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard as much as the next guy, but it still felt like T-Mobile was pushing it by planning to release the Relay for $150 with a two-year contract.
Especially that the 4-incher didn’t seem to have the absolute best display around (a 800 x 480 resolution Super AMOLED panel), or the snappiest processor under its hood (a dual-core S3 unit).
What we didn’t know however was that the Relay would come packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 CPU after al, and not an S3, which kind of changes the way we look at the phone. In all honesty, T-Mobile and Samsung didn’t seem to know that either, announcing just a couple of days ago that the handheld will be coming with an S3 processor.
We have no idea what exactly went wrong and who messed up the Relay’s spec sheet in the first place, but it doesn’t matter that much anymore, does it? What does matter is that, if nothing changes, in less than a week we will be seeing one of the snappiest ever slider phones get released. And although the Relay still doesn’t exactly qualify to be called a full-fledged high-ender, it will certainly be a more than satisfying mid-ranger.

Now about that CPU… If the current info on Samsung’s website is right, it’ll be an MSM8260A. That’s part of the same Snapdragon S4 Plus family like the very popular MSM8960, but is thought to be slightly slower and more power-efficient than its “brother”. We’ve seen the chip inside a number of mid-range and high-end phones already, like the HTC One S, Sony Xperia T and most recently the Acer CloudMobile.
The rest of the Relay’s specs and features don’t seem to have suffered any notable changes, so we’re still expecting the handheld to come with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, microSD support, the running of Android 4.0 ICS, dual 5MP / 1.3MP cameras, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, DLNA and HSPA+ 4G. The details about the weight and dimensions have also been finally revealed and look rather promising (5.29 ounces weight and 0.53 inches thickness).
