LG has just issued a press release saying that their current flagship smartphone, the Optimus G, is going to hit two American operators: AT&T and Sprint. We read the press release several times to try and find some details regarding pricing and availability, but it looks like that information has been purposefully left out. Now in case you’re not familiar with the Optimus G, here’s the basic spec sheet: 4.7 inch 1280 x 768 pixel display, 1.5 GHz quad core Snapdragon S4 processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, and as for the camera … let’s quote LG:
“Advanced 13 MP or 8 MP rear-facing camera with Time Catch Shot, “cheese shutter” and Smart Shutter and Low Light Shot Noise Reduction”That’s right, you’re going to get either a 13 megapixel or 8 megapixel camera, depending on which operator you go with. Sprint, arguably the “weaker” of the two operators, is getting the 13 megapixel version. AT&T gets the leftovers.
Should you buy the Optimus G? Funny you should ask that, because there have been a ton of rumors about a Nexus version of the G circulating around the internets. Earlier today we reported a rumor that said the “LG Optimus G Nexus” was going to be unveiled in November, and that it’s going to run Android 4.2, which we think is codenamed Key Lime Pie. Assuming the rumors are true, then we absolutely recommend you stay far away from the operator versions of LG’s flagship device.
You’ll save a lot of money too if you buy the Optimus G Nexus from Google and then shove a prepaid SIM card inside from either Straight Talk or Simple Mobile. Sure, you’re not going to get 4G LTE connectivity, but how often are you away from a WiFi access point? Be honest, chances are the only time you leave the house is to get groceries or return some video tapes.
