After officially learning that all US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S3 will get Jelly Bean “soon”, we all hoped to get automatic prompt messages for downloading a new buttery software package on our super-phones. That hasn’t happened yet, although owners of the US Cellular version of the S3 are getting a (much less significant) update as we speak.

The upgrade is available OTA (over-the-air) and through the PC Simple Upgrade tool, but in both cases you’ll be required to do some lifting instead of just waiting for a update notification to pop up.

You can perform the update without hooking up your phone to a PC, but you’ll need your device to be registered with a Google account, as well as access to a Wi-Fi connection. If that’s not a problem, you’ll have to hit Settings – About Device – Software update, and then follow the on screen prompts.
If that doesn’t work or you don’t have access to Wi-Fi, you’ll have to install Simple Upgrade Tool on a PC and then follow the instructions here. That might sound needlessly complicated, but you should get everything done in a matter of minutes.
Now that you know how to get the upgrade, let’s see what it brings to the table.

There is one special treat that I’m sure will pique your interest, and that is added Google Wallet support. This is the first US Cellular device to get Google Wallet, and in fact the first subsidized phone not on Sprint to be able to access the controversial mobile payment system.
The rest of the change log is far from spectacular, although you will find that several bugs and glitches will be fixed, including ones related to e-mail sending, attaching pictures in MMS messages, and device roaming.
A number of new pre-loaded apps are also coming to your USC Galaxy S3, including City ID, Daily Perks, Amazon Apps, Amazon IMDB, Amazon Shopping, and Slacker Radio. Those pretty much all sound like bloatware to me, but you will be able to deactivate them if you wish.
Has anyone tried out the new Android 4.0.4 update for size? Are you happy to see Google Wallet on your phone?
