With AT&T planning to complete its 4G LTE roll out only by the end of 2014, Verizon shows who’s boss in the country when it comes to the coveted high-speed Internet network coverage by announcing that it expects to wrap its 4G LTE deployment up faster than planned.
Speaking at the Wells Fargo Securities Technology, Media and Telecom conference, Verizon Communications CFO Fran Shammo said that the company has moved forward the completion date target for its 4G LTE deployment to mid-2013, six months ahead of the original timeline.
Shammo admitted that the company’s 4G LTE was not without its flaws, referring to several service disruptions that occurred in 2011, but since then the LTE service has been enjoyed relatively trouble-free by millions of subscribers in more than 400 markets.
As of now, Verizon’s 4G LTE network covers 250 million people in the U.S., a staggering 80% of the population. According to Verizon, 4G LTE made up 35% of the carrier’s overall data traffic in Q3, with close to 15 million postpaid LTE devices in use.
As for the carrier’s Share Everything data plans that were introduced in June, Shammo said that the adoption rate has been higher than expected. Over 13% of Verizon’s customers are now on the new data plans.
