With over 3,000 exhibitors, around 20,000 new products launched and “more than 150,000 attendees”, the recently completed CES 2013 trade show has definitely been a major success for technology in general and mobile in particular.
While we’re still unsure if the attendance record from last year has been broken (the final numbers are not in yet), it has clearly been an unbelievable show for exhibitors. We’ve seen not only loads of new devices getting unveiled, but also many with great innovative and world-changing potential.
And while it’s almost impossible to rank all the new products based on “objective” criteria, as far as the Android world is concerned there are only a handful of gadgets that could have battle it out for the CES 2013 crown.
One of these is definitely Sony’s Xperia Z, which we have had the pleasure of handling mere hours after its official debut. Though the phone was practically an open book to us after all the leaks preceding CES, seeing it in the flesh definitely left its mark.
Of course, we weren’t the only ones impressed with Sony’s push in the newly created Full HD smartphone niche, so it doesn’t come as a big surprise that Xperia Z left Vegas with a raft of awards.
According to a Sony Mobile count, the Z grabbed no less than 10 “major” awards in the aftermath of CES 2013, as well as two honorable mentions. Probably the most flattering of all came from TechnoBuffalo, the online publication that named the 5-inch phone the all-around star of CES (as in better than not only other mobile devices, but also cars, computers, TVs, blenders and what have you).
There’ve been also five “best cell phone” titles awarded to the Xperia Z, from Tech Radar, Laptop Magazine, Gotta Be Mobile, PC Pro and Mobile Geeks. Popular Mechanics included it in its Editor’s Choice Awards along with 13 other products, Stuff.TV put it on top of its Hot Stuff Awards, while Ubergizmo and Computer Active’s Best of CES lists also accommodated various other gadgets.
Finally, the phablet got nominated in both Cnet’s Best of CES Awards and TechnoBuffalo’s CES Reader’s Choice Awards. Neither of the two trophies was brought home by the Xperia Z, but the nominations stand and Sony should be proud of that. The second nod in particular, because the Z was the only phone on the 10 product shortlist.
But now it’s time to hear from you, guys. Do you think the Sony Xperia Z deserves all this recognition? Has it been the all-around biggest star of CES 2013? The biggest smartphone star? Neither? And if not, what gadget would you choose in its place?
