The best way to currently stream YouTube videos to a TV is by using more hardware. There are apps on the Xbox 360, Google TV, and others that are capable of streaming YouTube content to your TV. Some can even plug their computers or smartphones into the TV via HDMI and stream that way. This one extra piece of hardware may have become too tedious though.
Today, Google and YouTube have announced that the next generation of TVs will be able to stream YouTube content. That is without the help of additional hardware. The idea isn’t new, but the capable TVs will be. Consumers will be able to push videos from their mobile devices to their TVs with just one click.
There are quite a bit of brand names involved as well. As The Verge mentions, Sony, LG, Panasonic, Sharp, Vizio, Toshiba, Western Digital, and Bang & Olufsen will be bringing this technology in their next wave of hardware.
Will this new YouTube compatibility kill products like Google TV?
It shouldn’t affect any of the hardware that currently has this feature. Most people who own Google TV boxes or Xbox 360′s don’t use them for streaming YouTube to their TV. It’s a very minor feature that likely won’t affect these other products. If people are buying Google TV just to stream YouTube videos, then there is a much bigger problem to explore.Along with all the other features TVs have now, does YouTube compatibility make this next generation a must buy product?
