Nearly three months to the day since the official app first became available for download through the Google Play Store, Redbox Instant has finally come out of the beta testing stage to offer unlimited movie streaming to the general public. And it is right on schedule. But does it have what it takes to properly steal some market share away from the likes of Netflix?
In case you didn’t know, Redbox Instant is the product of a collaboration between Redbox and Verizon that aims to bring a new unlimited movie streaming service to users in the U.S. It is set to take on similar offerings from not only Netflix, but also the likes of Hulu and even online retail giant Amazon. It also works with a monthly subscription service model, just like its aforementioned competitors.
One of the most interesting things about it is the fact that as a service, it is relatively inexpensive. Those who would like to start enjoying the benefits of Redbox Instant may do so now by signing up to pay a mere $8 per month. And for that much money, they’ll be given unlimited access to not just video streaming but also a total of four one-night DVD rentals per month through Redbox kiosks. For now, Redbox Instant is only available to users in the U.S.
Redbox Instant appears to hold a lot of promise, but if it is to become successful, then it needs to have a much bigger catalog than it does now — just to be able to stand up to the competition.
What do you think? Does Redbox Instant appeal to you as an up-and-coming unlimited movie streaming alternative? Or do you feel like what you are using currently is good enough, and Redbox Instant is not even worth checking out? Can Redbox Instant perhaps provide anything that might get you to finally try out a service like it? Sound off in the comments.
