It’s official, the Samsung Galaxy S4 just got even better at Google I/O. Hugo Barra just announced that the Galaxy S4 will have a Google Edition, just like we reported this morning.
The device will run stock Android, seemingly with no modifications from Samsung. For all software purposes, this is a Nexus device, meaning that it will get prompt updates directly from Google, without the intervention of Samsung or carriers.
The Galaxy S4 Google Edition (unofficial name, for the moment) will sell through the Play Store and it will first become available on June 26. The 16GB model will ship with an unlocked bootloader and will cost $649.
According to Barra, the stock Android Galaxy S4 will be compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile, and will support LTE. Hardware seems to have remained unchanged, meaning that users will finally get an AOSP device with a removable battery and a microSD card slot.
For now, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition will sell in the United States only.
Stay tuned for more details.
