There are very limited options for anyone looking to avoid a 2-year contractual commitment that is required by network carriers in the US. While there are prepaid carriers around, the selection of devices is limited and decidedly “last year.” Unless you’re willing to shell out over $700 for an off-contract unlocked device that is.
Boost Mobile, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sprint Nextel, is one such prepaid wireless service, and, as expected, does not feature the latest devices in its lineup. The kind-of-good-news is that Boost Mobile will soon be selling the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G Touch, which is Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S2 variant. Sprint is known to sell it’s previous flagship devices with Boost, once they are replaced by newer phones. And the Epic 4G Touch can definitely be replaced, with the HTC EVO 4G LTE (One X variant) and the Samsung Galaxy S3 taking over the mantle.
Phandroid noticed the Boost Mobile Epic 4G Touch in a User Agent Profile that surfaced on Sprint’s servers, that showed a device code-named SPH-D710BST. SPH-D710 is the code for the Epic 4G Touch, with the additional BST most likely standing for Boost Mobile.
As a refresher, the specifications of the Epic 4G Touch are exactly identical to the Galaxy S2, and include:
1.2 Ghz dual-core Exynos processor
1 GB RAM
4.3″ Super AMOLED display
480×800 resolution with 206 ppi
16GB internal storage, expandable via microSD
8MP rear camera with LED flash, 2MP front camera
1,800 mAH battery
The Epic 4G Touch is Sprint last year’s flagship device, but it’s still a great option for anyone who is not looking to shell out big money for the latest high-end Android releases, or just doesn’t need or want a very powerful quad-core device. Even by today’s standards, the specifications of the phone are still really good, and the Samsung Epic 4G Touch should definitely be in consideration for anyone on the Boost Mobile network. Stay tuned for the final pricing and release date information, which should be available soon.
