Just about every handset maker on the face of the planet is going to announce a 1080p smartphone during the next one to two quarters. HTC may have been the first, but as we said in a previous article, there are at least five more companies who are going to join the race. One of them is Huawei, a Chinese smartphone maker and infrastructure vendor that most folks associate with budget handsets. They want to shake that image and move into the premium segment.

According to a Richard Yu, Huawei’s Head of Devices, a phone called the D2 will be announced at CES in January next month. Yes, it’ll have a 5 inch 1080p display. Shortly after he made that announcement on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, Tenaa, China’s version of the FCC, uploaded three photos of the D2 to their website. We’re thrilled that the device lacks any front facing buttons, but there’s not much else to say about the phone since the photos aren’t exactly high quality.

Which 1080p phone are we looking forward to the most? Two come to mind, three technically if you include the second half of 2013. Let’s start with the one likely to be announced first: HTC’s M7. It’s basically the HTC Butterfly/DNA, but with a faster processor and a 13 megapixel camera. Next, the elephant in the room, is the Samsung Galaxy S4. Little is know about the device, which makes it all the more interesting. And finally, the third generation Note. Rumors say it’ll have a 6.3 inch screen. That’s absolutely insane, and we definitely hope it doesn’t happen, but hey, you never know with Samsung. They’ll launch just about anything to see if consumers are interested.
Who else is going to make a 5 inch 1080p phone? Sony, but they’ll figure out some way to screw it up. They always do. And there’s ZTE, who is … meh, they’re like Huawei’s little brother.
