The legal battle between Samsung and Swedish equipment maker Ericsson has taken a new turn. Samsung has decided to seek an import ban on Ericsson products in the US. The Korean conglomerate has already filed a complaint against Ericsson with the US International Trade Commission (ITC), according to an official statement by the company.
Samsung is accusing Ericsson of infringing seven of its patents. Many believe that Samsung is doing it on a tit-for-tat basis, as Ericsson also requested ITC to impose an import ban on Samsung products over patent infringement earlier this year.
Samsung has issued an official statement saying “We have sought to negotiate with Ericsson in good faith. However, Ericsson has proven unwilling to continue such negotiations by making unreasonable claims, which it is now trying to enforce in court”. Samsung says that the Ericsson products that infringe its patents include telecommunications networking equipments, such as base stations.
Market watchers say that Ericsson, a major player in the network equipment market, is enforcing its intellectual property because the company has seen a large drop in sales, which went down 17 percent in the third quarter. The company wants to fill the void with income from its patents.
Ericsson is not the only company Samsung is fighting legal battles with. The Korean company is also facing legal challenges with Apple in different parts of the world.
