Amazon has just announced AutoRip, its new music service which is offering customers free digital copies of CDs in their music collection. The only catch, you must have brought AutoRip compatible CDs from Amazon. So if you’re old CDs are from somewhere else you’ll just have to stick with the original hard copy.
If you were fortunate enough to have purchased your CDs from Amazon, you can claim your free MP3s all the way back to purchases made from the launch of Amazon’s music store 1998. AutoRip applies to more than 50,000 albums produced over the past 15 years, and includes CDs from the largest three record labels.
If you have an existing Cloud Player account, the MP3s will be automatically added to your online library. You can then instantly stream to compatible devices such as the Kindle Fire, any Android or iOS smartphone, Samsung TVs, or virtually anything else that has a web browser.
Interestingly, there is no opt-out of this service, so you might see some old classics pop up in your library, which may or may not be a good thing. Even if you own a massive CD collection you needn’t worry, as Amazon has said that AutoRip won’t eat into your cloud storage allowance or rack up any additional fees.
New purchases of AutoRip compatible CDs will also be automatically added to your cloud account, so there’s no more need to spend time ripping albums to get them on your MP3 player.
I only wish I’d brought more of my albums from Amazon.
