A few days ago, a new report suggested that HTC is making a move against developers by taking down ROM websites that offer HTC firmwares for various devices, with one of such site being HTCRuu.com, which was approached by HTC and asked to remove custom ROMs.
HTC has posted an official notice on its website to explain that the move against HTCRuu.com doesn’t mean it has something against developers looking for such files in the first place. Instead, the company is simply protecting its image, as the site in question had various branding elements for HTC:
The issue with the site in question was NOT that it provided custom ROMs or RUUs. The site used HTC trademarks without a license from HTC. The domain name contained ‘HTC’ and it used HTC logos, making it appear to be an official HTC website. Like any other company, we must protect our trademarks and brand. We cannot risk being associated with, and held liable for, software that we don’t have any control over that’s put onto an HTC device through a third party.So basically HTC doesn’t want to be held responsible for anything that could go wrong for users that install ROMs from HTCRuu.com. Which means the site is still not safe.
In its short note, the company also reminded its customers that, obviously, it “embraces the community that chooses to flash custom ROMs” and will not abandon it. As for HTCRuu.com, time will tell what will happen with the website.
