Well, looky what we have here, a new kid on the block ready to take the tech world by storm with a Full HD panel. This one is supposedly called Vega No. 6, is also known as the IM-A860, and comes from Pantech, a name that didn’t say much to smartphone lovers until a while back, but that’s showing tremendous progress lately.

The Vega No. 6 is rumored to be shown off by the Korean mobile phone maker on January 28 (a week from now, that is), and is actually a much better kept secret than most of the previous 1080p devices unveiled.
While we don’t know if it’s because the company can keep things on the down low better than Sony or HTC or because people are not that interested in Pantech-made gadgets, the only specs leaked at this time are a 5.9-inch display, the already customary Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, 2 GB of RAM and a 13 MP rear-facing camera.
We don’t even have one single pic starring the device, so it’s probably way too early to call this one a hit or flop, right? Still, we can’t help shake the feeling the 1080p smartphone niche is already overcrowded, which would force Pantech to bring something special to the table to be noticed.
Discover
The above specs, while far from mediocre, won’t really cut it, so what could be the ace under Pantech’s sleeve? Could it be the design? Probably not, even though we’ve been quite smitten with Pantech Discover’s curvaceous body during CES 2013. The Vega No. 6 is a much bigger fellow than the Discover, so adding curves to its chassis will only make it feel bulkier and harder to carry around.
Maybe a whopping battery? It’s not impossible, but will it have what it takes to trounce Huawei Ascend Mate’s humongous 4,050 mAh ticker? Really, really unlikely.
Which only leaves us with pricing. An area where Pantech could definitely undercut the likes of Sony or HTC, but where once again it will be awfully tough to go against Huawei, not to mention Oppo or ZTE.
But let’s not sing the doom song for Pantech’s Vega No. 6 just yet, because after all we don’t even know if the big guy is real. Do you think it is? And could Pantech hope for something else than a short 15 minutes of local fame with it?
